Ciao! This week’s theme is “Only You”. To start off let’s listen to a song with that very same title, by the Platters from 1955, with lead vocals by Tony Williams.
Our next song was originally recorded by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons in 1967, but this is the Boys Town Gang version from 1982, with Cynthia Manley’s fabulous voice. Here is “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”.
Now let’s listen to the 1974 hit “Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Swede, also known as the Ooga-Chaka song.
In 1974 Claudio Baglioni released the song “E Tu”, from his album of the same name. The title means “and you”, and it says “there is nothing but you, only you, always you”.
Blue Moon by Ella Fitzgerald from 1957, was originally written in 1934 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and over the years became a standard ballad that has been recorded by many artists. My favorite version is this one, with the beautiful tones of Ella Fitzgerald.
And now here is “My Girl” by the Temptations from 1965.
“Sei nell’Anima” by Gianna Nannini from 2006 is a very popular Italian song by a very popular artist. The title means “you’re in my soul”.
As I’ve said before, the band Styx is one of my favorites. That’s S T Y X, named for the river Styx which flows through the underworld of Greek mythology. This song from 1973 is my absolute favorite by them: “Lady”.
Now here’s “Your Song” by Elton John from 1970.
“Almeno Tu Nell'Universo” by Mia Martini from 1989 talks about how people are fickle and ever changing, but she says that the man she loves is her fixed point, like the sun, and he shines only for her. The title of the song means “at least you, in the universe”.
Next up is “Misty” by Johnny Mathis from 1959.
In 1984 REO Speedwagon released their album “Wheels Are Turnin” and our next song from that album, “Can’t Fight This Feeling” is a power ballad. The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and held the top spot for three consecutive weeks. It was the group's second number-one hit on the U.S. charts and reached number sixteen in the UK.
Now let’s listen to “Solo Per Te” by Italian rock band Negramaro from 2005. The title means “only for you”.
“Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion from 1996 is a classic love song, perhaps her signature song, and it perfectly expresses this week’s theme.
