Synth-Pop Love

Ciao! This week’s theme is “Synth-Pop Love”. Let’s start things off with a song that perfectly expresses the essence of the synth-pop genre. Released in 1980, "Fade to Grey" is by Visage, and it became an instant hit across Europe. Here’s "Vienna" by Ultravox. Did you know that this track was famously used in the film "Billy Elliot"? Let’s listen… Now here is "Shake the Disease" by Depeche Mode. Our next song is the synth-pop anthem "Love Action (I Believe in Love)" by The Human League. And now here's "Talking in Your Sleep" by The Romantics. It was a massive hit in the early '80s, reaching the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Next up is "Secret" by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, better known as OMD. Now let’s listen to "Lessons in Love" by Level 42. This song was a huge hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries. Up next, we have a synth-pop classic that's guaranteed to melt your heart. &

Life After Love

Ciao! The theme of this episode is “Life After Love”. Our first song is “Believe” by Cher from her 1998 album of the same name.

Next up is “Nessun Rimpianto” by the Italian band 883 from 1997. The title of the song means “no regrets”.

"Waiting for Love" is a song by Swedish DJ and music producer Avicii. The song features lyrics and uncredited vocals by Simon Aldred, the former lead singer of the English band Cherry Ghost. The song was released in May of 2015 as the lead single from Avicii's second studio album, “Stories”.

“The Way We Were” was written by Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman and Marvin Hamlisch and recorded by Barbra Streisand for the 1973 film of the same name. The song won two Academy Awards for the songwriters. The single was also a commercial success, topping the charts in both Canada and the US, and in the top 40 in Australia and the UK. "The Way We Were" was 1974's most successful recording in the United States, and has since been certified Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over one million units.

Now let’s listen to “Starò Meglio” which means “I’ll get better” by Alessandra Amoroso from 2013.

And now here is “As Tears Go By” by the Rolling Stones from 1966.

Next up is “The Second Time Around” by Shalamar from 1979.

Our next song is “Una Canzone d’Amore Buttata Via” by Italian singer songwriter Vasco Rossi from 2020. The title of the song means “a love song, wasted”.

“When I Was Your Man” was recorded by Bruno Mars in 2012. It features Mars with a piano accompaniment as the sole instrumentation. Several music critics praised Mars's vocal prowess, calling it a "vulnerable and emotional ballad". The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA and reached the top ten in 7 other countries. "When I Was Your Man" was the world's eighth best-selling digital single of 2013, with sales of 8.3 million copies.

And now here is Billy Ocean with his 1986 hit  “There’ll Be Sad Songs”.

Next up is “L’Universo Tranne Noi” by Max Pezzali from 2013. It’s a song about a love that was incredible, the kind of love that all the really great love songs are about, but the relationship ended, and he says that he thought that even if the universe itself would disappear, their love never would, and he still believes that some day, she will return.

Here is a beautiful song from the 2018 film “A Star is Born”: “I’ll Never Love Again” by Lady Gaga.

The former lead singer of the band “Journey”, Steve Perry, wrote “Foolish Heart” with Randy Goodrum. It was recorded for Perry’s first solo album, “Street Talk” and released as its fourth single in November of 1984. “Foolish Heart” peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Adult Contemporary chart in February of 1985.

Next up is “Ricomincio da Qui” by Malika Ayane from 2010. The title of the song means “I begin again, starting here”.
