Synth-Pop Love

Ciao! This week’s theme is “Synth-Pop Love”. Let’s start things off with a song that perfectly expresses the essence of the synth-pop genre. Released in 1980, "Fade to Grey" is by Visage, and it became an instant hit across Europe. Here’s "Vienna" by Ultravox. Did you know that this track was famously used in the film "Billy Elliot"? Let’s listen… Now here is "Shake the Disease" by Depeche Mode. Our next song is the synth-pop anthem "Love Action (I Believe in Love)" by The Human League. And now here's "Talking in Your Sleep" by The Romantics. It was a massive hit in the early '80s, reaching the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Next up is "Secret" by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, better known as OMD. Now let’s listen to "Lessons in Love" by Level 42. This song was a huge hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries. Up next, we have a synth-pop classic that's guaranteed to melt your heart. &

Is It Over?

Let’s start off with “Ogni Volta” by Antonello Venditti. In English the title of the song is “every time”.

Next up is “I Wish It Would Rain Down” by Phil Collins from his 1989 album “But Seriously”.

Our next song is by Tiziano Ferro, who is an Italian singer, Grammy Award winning, songwriter, producer and author. Known as the modern face of Italian pop music, he frequently writes songs for other artists and has produced albums for Giusy Ferreri, Alessandra Amoroso and Baby K. Here is his 2003 song “Sere Nere” which means “black evenings”.

Here’s another great song by Phil Collins:“One More Night” from 1985. It was the first single in the US and second in the UK from the artist’s third album, No Jacket Required. "One More Night" was Collins' second number 1 single in the US, and his fourth single to reach the top ten in the UK, peaking at No. 4. In the US, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 50 in February and hit number one seven weeks later, remaining on top for 2 weeks.

Now let’s listen to “Infinito” by Raf from 2001. It’s a beautiful song about a relationship that is over, but a love that will last forever. In fact, the title of the song means “infinite”.

Next we have “It Ain't Over Til It's Over” by Lenny Kravitz from 1991.

Our next song was the winner of the 2020 edition of the San Remo Festival. Here is “Fai Rumore” by Diodato. He says “make some noise, because I can’t stand this unnatural silence between you and me”.

Don Henley is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and a founding member of the Eagles. He was the drummer and one of the lead vocalists for the Eagles from 1971 until the band broke up in 1980. He has reprised those duties for the group's reunions since 1994. Our next song is from a 1994 Live Unplugged concert for MTV. Here is Don Henley, with The Eagles, singing “The Heart of the Matter”.

Next up is “Abitudine” by Subsonica from 2005  The title means “habit” and it implies that they are just staying together out of habit, because he says “how can I tell you that you are no longer a part of me. We’re just echoes of words that are trapped at the bottom of our hearts. We are just misunderstanding and tears.”

Now let’s listen to a golden oldie, “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” by Wayne Newton from 1965.

“Dammi Un Solo Minuto” by Pooh from 1977 is one of their most famous numbers. The title means “give me just one minute”.

And now here is “Snuff” by Slipknot from their 2008 album “All Hope is Gone”.

I didn’t start out planning this episode with the idea of including 3 songs from Phil Collins. It just worked out that way, because the songs all fit this week's theme perfectly. Here is “Against All Odds”, which is subtitled “Take a Look at Me Now”. The song is from 1981 and it won a Grammy, was nominated for a second Grammy, and was also nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
