Synth-Pop Love

Ciao! This week’s theme is “Synth-Pop Love”. Let’s start things off with a song that perfectly expresses the essence of the synth-pop genre. Released in 1980, "Fade to Grey" is by Visage, and it became an instant hit across Europe. Here’s "Vienna" by Ultravox. Did you know that this track was famously used in the film "Billy Elliot"? Let’s listen… Now here is "Shake the Disease" by Depeche Mode. Our next song is the synth-pop anthem "Love Action (I Believe in Love)" by The Human League. And now here's "Talking in Your Sleep" by The Romantics. It was a massive hit in the early '80s, reaching the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Next up is "Secret" by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, better known as OMD. Now let’s listen to "Lessons in Love" by Level 42. This song was a huge hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries. Up next, we have a synth-pop classic that's guaranteed to melt your heart. &

Don't Break My Heart

Ciao! This week’s theme is “Don’t Break My Heart” and our first song is “Oceans” by Pearl Jam, from 1991.

Next up we have “La Canzone dell’Amore Perduto” by Fabrizio de Andrè from 1966. The title means “the song of lost love”.

“Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence from 2003 was recorded for their debut studio album, Fallen. Following the inclusion of "Bring Me to Life" on the Daredevil soundtrack the song became a commercial and critical success, topping the charts in Australia, the UK and Italy. It charted in the top ten in more than fifteen countries including the United States, Argentina, Germany and New Zealand. The band won in the category for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 46th Grammy Awards where the song was also nominated for Best Rock Song.

Now let’s listen to “Io No” by Vasco Rossi. In the full context of the rest of the lyrics, the title means “I won’t”. He is promising that he won’t forget her, but he also says that he won’t wait for her any more.

Our next song is “Looking for Love” by Whitesnake from 1987.

And now here is “Prima Che Esci” by Laura Pausini. The title means “before you leave”.

Here is one of my favorites from the 70s, “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” by Elton John, with Kiki Dee, from 1976.

Next up we have “Sassi” by Gino Paoli from 1961. The word “sassi” means “stones”, and he says “stones that the sea has consumed, are my words of love for you. I didn’t know how to love you. I didn't know how to give what you wanted from me. Every word that we say has been said a thousand times.”

Now here is “Love Boat Captain” by Pearl Jam from 2002.

Domenico Modugno is a famous Italian singer who has also written several top hits. The song “Cosa Sono Le Nuvole” was first released in 1968. It wasn’t written by Modugno, but by Pier Paolo Pasolini. It is a very poetic song, full of metaphors, and it is about love and life. The title means “what are clouds”. This phrase is never mentioned in the lyrics of the song, although he does say “my love for you is blown away by the wind”.

Here is one of my favorite groups of all time, Bread, with “Lost Without Your Love” from their sixth and final studio album of the same name, released in 1977. The song became the group's sixth and final top 10 hit, reaching number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in February of 1977.

Now let’s listen to “A Mano a Mano” by Riccardo Cocciante from 1978. The title of the song literally translated is “hand by hand” but it means “little by little”. The song is very beautiful and he says “little by little the sweet faded memory melts into tears”.

Next up is “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day from 2004.

And now we have “Mi Manchi” by Fausto Leali from 1999. The title means “I miss you”.
