Broken Hearts

Ciao! This week I’ve chosen the theme “Broken Hearts”. Yes, it happens. Sometimes love hurts! But fortunately even sad love songs can be beautiful! Let’s start off with “All At Once” by Whitney Houston from 1986.

Our next song is “La Canzone Che Se Ne Va” which literally means “the song that leaves”. It’s by Zucchero from 2019 and the lyrics talk about his lady leaving him, and their love song is leaving as well.

Now let’s listen to the beautiful “Angel Of The Night” by Dee Dee Bridgewater from 1970. It is the English version of “Uomini Soli” by the Italian band Pooh, which was presented at the San Remo Music Festival that same year.

“If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago was written and sung by bass player Peter Cetera and released as a single on July 31st, 1976. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 in October and stayed there for two weeks, making it the first number one hit for the group. It was also the band’s biggest hit internationally, topping the charts in the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, and the Netherlands. The song also won several Grammy Awards and nominations and has been certified gold and platinum by the RIAA.

Next up is “Se Stiamo Insieme” by Ricardo Cocciante from 1991. The title means “if we are together”, and the lyrics say “if we are together, there must be a reason, and I want to re-discover it tonight. If we are together, there must be something that brings us together again”.

Our next song is “Everybody Hurts” by REM, originally released on their 1992 album “Automatic for the People”. The single was released in 1993 and peaked at number 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland and the UK. In 2003, Q magazine ranked "Everybody Hurts" at number 31 in their list of "1001 Best Songs Ever", and in 2005, Blender ranked the song at number 238 in their list of "Greatest Songs Since You Were Born".

Now let’s listen to “Cambiare” by Alex Baroni. The title means “to change'', and he is trying hard to get over the end of a relationship. He says “I will hide you in my dreams, but I won’t sleep. I have to get over it”.

Now here is “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler from 1983.

“Walk on By” was composed by Burt Bacharach, with lyrics by Hal David, for singer Dionne Warwick in 1963. The song peaked at number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Cash Box Rhythm and Blues Chart and was nominated for a 1965 Grammy Award for the Best Rhythm and Blues Recording.

“Io Che Non Vivo Senza Te” by Bobby Solo is a golden oldies Italian love song. The title means “I, who can’t live without you”.

Now let’s listen to one of my favorite songs by Santana: “Smooth” from 1999 featuring singer Rob Thomas.

Next up is “Mille Giorni di Me e di Te” by Claudio Baglioni from 1990. The title means “a thousand days of you and me”.

“In Too Deep” by Genesis is from their 1986 album “Invisible Touch”. It was released as the second single from the LP in the UK and the fourth single in the US. The single was a success in America during the summer of 1987; it reached the No. 3 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the No. 1 spot on the Adult Contemporary chart.
