Synth-Pop Love

Ciao! This week’s theme is “Synth-Pop Love”. Let’s start things off with a song that perfectly expresses the essence of the synth-pop genre. Released in 1980, "Fade to Grey" is by Visage, and it became an instant hit across Europe. Here’s "Vienna" by Ultravox. Did you know that this track was famously used in the film "Billy Elliot"? Let’s listen… Now here is "Shake the Disease" by Depeche Mode. Our next song is the synth-pop anthem "Love Action (I Believe in Love)" by The Human League. And now here's "Talking in Your Sleep" by The Romantics. It was a massive hit in the early '80s, reaching the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Next up is "Secret" by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, better known as OMD. Now let’s listen to "Lessons in Love" by Level 42. This song was a huge hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries. Baby Come Back

Ciao! This week I’ve chosen the theme “Baby Come Back” and our first song has that exact title. It’s by the American rock band Player. Released in late 1977 as the lead single from their self-titled debut album, the song was the breakthrough single for the band, gaining them mainstream success, hitting number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number ten on the R&B charts in 1978.

Next up is “Tornerò” by Santo California from 1992. The title means “I will return”.

Now let’s listen to “Run to You” by Bryan Adams from 1984.

Our next song is “Torna a Surriento” by Claudio Villa, from 1957. Villa was probably the most well-known Italian singer of his era (on an international level). The title means “come back to Sorrento” and it is sung in Neapolitan dialect. Composed in 1894 by Italian musician Ernesto De Curtis to words by his brother, the poet and painter Giambattista De Curtis. The song was copyrighted officially in 1905, and has become one of the most popular songs of this traditional genre, along with others such as "'O sole mio", "Funiculì funiculà", and "Santa Lucia".

Next up is “Come Back to Me” by Janet Jackson from 1990”.

Now let’s listen to Maneskin with “Torna a Casa” from 2018. The title means “come back home”.

“Open Arms” is a song by American rock band Journey. It was released as a single from the “Heavy Metal” soundtrack and their 1981 album, “Escape”. “Open Arms” is a power ballad and it is one of the band's most recognizable radio hits as well as their biggest US Billboard Hot 100 hit. It reached number two in February of 1982 and held that position for six weeks.

And now here is Fabio Concato with “Tornando a Casa”, which means “returning home”. The song is from 1986.

English singer John Newman released the song “Love Me Again” in 2013 as the lead single from his debut studio album, Tribute. The song was written by Newman and Steve Booker and was later featured on the soundtrack for the video game FIFA 14. It was nominated for the Brit Award for British Single of the Year in 2014 and nominated for the 2014 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song.

Next we have “Ritornerai” by Antonella Ruggiero from her 2007 album featuring songs by composers from Genoa. The song was written by Bruno Lauzi and the title means “you will return”.

Here is “Home” by the Foo Fighters from 2007.

Our next song is “Ricominciamo” by Adriano Pappalardo from 1998 The title means “let’s start over”.

One of my favorite R&B groups from the 70s is “Peaches & Herb”, and here they are with “Reunited” from 1978.

And now here is “Vieni da Me” by Le Vibrazioni from 2003. The title means “come to me”.

Next up is “Whatever it Takes” by Lifehouse from 2007.
