Always

Ciao! This week I have chosen the theme “Always”. To start out, let’s listen to “Never My Love” by The Association from 1967. Next up is “Niente al Mondo” by Dolcenera from 2015. The title means “nothing in the world” and she says there is nothing in the world that she would trade for her love. Our next song is by Belgian tenor Helmut Lotti. The title is “All My Life” and it is a powerful song about a man who will love forever even though he doesn’t know when or if he will see his loved one again. The song was written by Helmut Lotti and Joaquin Rodrigo and was first released by Helmut Lotti in 1995. Now let’s listen to “Forever and Ever” by Demis Roussos from 1973. Our next song is by Eros Ramazzotti from 2003. The title is “Un Emozione Per Sempre” which means “an emotion forever”. It is about a love story that is over but unforgettable, making him remember many happy times, and he says some loves leave their mark on us, for always. Now here is “I Swear” by All 4 One from 1994. “Alway...

Unlucky in Love

The theme I have chosen for this week is “Unlucky in Love”. To start out, let’s listen to “Jamaica Farewell” by Harry Belafonte, from 1957.

Our next song is by Eros Ramazzotti. It is “Parla Con Me”, which means “talk to me”. He is asking his love to talk to him about what’s going wrong, instead of just suffering in silence.

Now let’s listen to “Rain and Tears” by Demis Roussos from 1993.

Next up is “Un’Altra Storia” by Zucchero, from 2017. The title means “another story”. As usual he sings part of the song in Italian and part in English. For non-Italian speakers, the part where he says “il cielo è nero” means “the sky is black”, and this refers to how the possible end of their relationship is making him feel.

In 1971 The Bee Gees released “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb and was the first single on the group's 1971 album Trafalgar. It was their first US No. 1 single and also reached No. 1 in Cashbox magazine for two weeks.

Now here is “Cinque Giorni” by Italian singer-songwriter Michele Zarrillo from 1994. The title means “five days” and it refers to the amount of time that has passed since his love left him. The song is very emotional, as he is clearly suffering a great deal, and he begs her to help him destroy his memories of her.

Now let’s listen to “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” by Jimmy Ruffin from 1967.

Eduardo De Crescenzo released “Ancora” in 1981. The title means “again”, and the lyrics were written by Franco Migliacci and the music by Claudio Mattone. The song became the first success of De Crescenzo, and it has become a classic of Italian easy listening, having been recorded by many singers during various musical events over the years. It is also one of the top three money earners for the songwriters, according to statistics from the Italian copyright organization SIAE.

Toni Braxton released “Unbreak My Heart” in 1996. The song is a ballad in which she begs her love to return and undo the pain that he has caused. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for a total of eleven weeks, and reached the same position on the Hot Dance Club Songs and Adult Contemporary charts. When Billboard celebrated their 40 year anniversary in 1998, the song was declared as the most successful song by a solo artist in the Billboard Hot 100 history. In Europe, the song reached the top five in more than ten countries while peaking at number one in Austria, Belgium, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Our next song is “Tu Come Stai” by Claudio Baglioni. The title means “how are you” and he admits that he has not gotten over the breakup with his love. He describes eating at a low cost restaurant “seated next to Pain” and he says “yesterday I found your initials carved in my heart”. He asks a series of questions such as “who comes to get you”, “who opens the door for you”, “who follows your every footstep”...and implies that he regrets that he is not the lucky one who gets to do it.

Now here is “The Scientist” by Coldplay from 2002.

Here’s a timeless classic by “The Righteous Brothers” from 1965, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”.

Our next song is by Massimo Di Cataldo from 2019. The title is “Prendimi L’Anima” which means “take my soul” and according to the singer it is about an online relationship that has become cold and soulless, because there is no physical contact between the two of them.

Next up is “The Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles from 1965.
